In Remembrance of Hanshi Steve Arneil

On the first anniversary of the passing of our Founder Hanshi Steve Arneil, I ask you to spend some time today reflecting on what this great man has given the IFK.

As a direct student of Sosai Oyama, he was a leader who was at the forefront of the growth of Kyokushin in the 70s and 80s throughout Europe.

For nearly thirty years Hanshi developed the IFK to become what it is today: a truly global federation of likeminded Karateka that have mutual respect for one another regardless of gender, ethnicity, or grade.

Today we will mourn the loss of Hanshi Arneil knowing he lives on in the members of his organization, the IFK.

Conversation between Hanshi Arneil and the IFK Executive Board

As we approach the anniversary of our first year with Shihan David Pickthall as President we look back at the conversation between Hanshi Arneil and the IFK Executive Board.

This important moment reflected the progression in the growth of the IFK but has such sad emotions as our Founder would pass away within half a year.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Hanshi Steve Arneil who died suddenly on Friday 2nd July 2021 in London.

His influence and impact on Kyokushin Karate internationally for nearly sixty years are immeasurable and he was, without doubt, an icon of the twentieth century who influenced many.

There are no words to express the loss of Hanshi and our sympathies are extended to his family at this difficult time.

“There are times of suffering which remain

in our lives like black absolutes and are

not blotted out. Fortunate are those for whom

these black stars shed some sort of light.”

Hanshi shone a light in many people’s lives and that light will shine with us all eternally.

A full appreciation of Hanshi’s life and achievement will be published by the International Federation of Karate in due course.
